Chapter Eight

Wednesday May 12 1886

Metzger bounced along on the buckboard, thinking how best to leave his mark on his target. He thought about his walk around and through the Marshall Field building, and that most of the activity centered on the front entrance, where the store’s well-heeled patrons scurried in and out like brightly coloured rats. He thought about the rear of the building, where he had so easily gained entrance to the store through the loading bays. He chuckled again at the thought of the witless manager, in his idiotic moustache and fine tailored suit, walking him through the building as though he was escorting some grand financier with plans to invest in the store. Little did this fool know of the plans Metzger had for his fine store and its verminous patrons. Once the cart was parked in the quiet alleyway off State Street that Metzger had selected for it, the next excitement he would look forward to at Marshall Field’s fine store would be watching it collapse in flames. Metzger allowed himself a self-satisfied smile.

Rumbling on through the wakening streets Metzger frowned at the real problem he had. What should he do with Hans? The stupid boy had endangered everything by dragging the girl to the stockyards, but she was not a problem. Metzger already knew he would leave her there to die; but Hans? Hans had shown disloyalty twice. First by writing the note his mother wanted him to take to the police and now with this girl.

A father should protect his son, but a boy should respect his father. Metzger angrily flicked the reins against the pony’s boney flanks. It trotted a little faster towards its fate.
